At Upper Mesa Falls, a thunderous curtain of water – as tall as a 10-story building – pours over remnants of an ancient volcanic super-eruption. A mile south, Lower Mesa Falls repeats the performance, the river continually chiseling away at the solidified ash and lava. The beautiful Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are the last prominent waterfalls on the Snake River unaffected by manmade influences. A scenic walking path leads to excellent viewpoints. Mesa Falls is only 21.3 miles from the SpringHill Suites in Island Park. It is a beautiful and scenic drive through Harriman State Park! The Mesa Falls Visitor Center is open daily in the summer and has limited hours on certain weekends during the winter. From the Visitor Center, an accessible trail and boardwalk provide spectacular views of Mesa Falls.

Big Springs is one of the headwaters of the Snake River. A short distance from the glassy pool is a bridge. Toss bread crumbs into the water from it, and you’ll see that constant flow (at a year-round temperature of 52 degrees) and the clean gravel bottom make for perfect trout habitat. Big Springs’ trout get BIG! Leave your fishing pole in the car, though: No fishing is allowed until below the outlet to Henry’s Lake, several miles away. The spring supports enormous rainbow trout which are protected from fishing. A .5 mile handicap accessible trail offers wildlife viewing of osprey, bald eagles, waterfowl and the occasional moose, white-tailed deer, and muskrat. Wildlife can be seen year-round although winter access is restricted by snow. Go east on Big Springs road in the Macks Inn area and it will take you right to this site.
Warm River Springs is a must see as well! Warm River Springs comes right our of the mountain and is only 23 miles from Big Springs.

Experience Targhee National Forest through hiking. Coffee Pot Rapids Trail hike is one of many hikes in Island Park and is along the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River samples the birds and wildlife of the river in a tranquil stretch. The river flows so gently here that algae make the water green. Because the trail is shaded, the hike is pleasant on a hot day. The destination, Coffee Pot Rapids, sprays white water in a dark, narrow section of the canyon.
